Jim ThompsonORIENTAL ODYSSEY II

ORASARAM

REF: JT014042001 - CEREMONIAL

  • J T014042001

When Bangkok was inaugurated as Thailand's capital city in the late 18th century, trade between Siam and China expanded, and Chinese ceramics became increasingly popular at the Siamese court as symbols of wealth and luxury. Chinese artistic styles influenced palace interiors, with tables adorned in fine porcelain, particularly altar tables inspired by Chinese designs. This design was inspired by a mural at Bangkok’s royal temple Wat Ratchaorasaram, rebuilt in the 1820s during the reign of Rama III. The intricate embroidery layered atop printed Chinese key motifs depicts auspicious objects used in ancestor-worship rites—vases, pumpkins, and flowers arranged in a still-life composition that appears frozen in time.
